How Remote Printer Management Decreases Downtime and TCO
Printer fleets in many organizations have become increasingly complex. Devices can be stationary or mobile with connectivity options for both Ethernet and wireless. No matter the device or the connection, these printers are mission-critical from an operational standpoint, and IT resources need the ability to manage the printers from any location. Centralized control of networked printers is more efficient and can provide visibility into the network that can reveal opportunities for asset optimization or other improvements. In addition, many companies don’t have the resources or staffing necessary to deploy and configure a large number of industrial printers. They also often lack visibility, monitoring and updating capabilities. Remote printer management systems can help these end users streamline deployment and improve management and ongoing maintenance of their printers without straining their limited IT resources, and without an investment in additional staff.
Options for Printer Management
For companies that have deployed Zebra printers, there are a variety of options available when it comes to centralized or remote printer management. Organizations that are using Zebra Link-OS enabled printers have a leg up, in that Link-OS printers are connected, secure, and include onboard intelligence that can make this type of management structure easy to implement.
While nearly all Zebra printers on the market today are Link-OS, IT personnel will need to identify which currently deployed devices are not, in order to implement options for legacy printers including the Xi Series, 105SL Series, ZM400/600, and ZM4/6.
However, with Zebra’s latest introduction of the ZT600 (which replaces the Xi4) and ZT510 (which replaces the 105SL printer) as well as other recently refreshed printers, Zebra has a complete line of devices that can be managed using either Zebra’s Printer Profile Manager Enterprise Software or SOTI MobiControl Connector.
Printer Profile Manager Enterprise is an app that enables Link-OS Printer Management. The solution was developed to provide visibility and complete control of printer settings, minimizing the time required to configure, deploy, update, and troubleshoot Zebra Link-OS networked printers while reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO).
The solution provides the ability to manage printers (individually or as a group) from anywhere in the world using a browser. Every Link-OS printer on the network can be quickly discovered and connected to the management console. As printers connect to the network, Printer Profile Manager automatically checks for new content or updates and then retrieves and sends that content as needed.
Prior to Printer Profile Manager Enterprise, other available printer management solutions could only offer control over a small subset of Zebra Link-OS printer features, which limited manageability, hampered troubleshooting, and increased printer downtime and TCO.
Printer Profile Manager Enterprise offers extensive control over the complete feature set of Zebra Link-OS printers, along with an intuitive user interface. It is also updated frequently, which ensures support for new printer features and technology.
SOTI MobiControl Connector is an application that enables Link-OS Printer Management in the SOTI environment across WLAN and Ethernet infrastructures. MobiControl includes the ability to create and send profiles, to view printers and change settings, download firmware, and perform basic troubleshooting.
Using MobiControl eliminates the need to use multiple apps to manage different device types, and allows users to leverage SOTI productivity and administrative features with Link-OS printers.
There are also options available for companies that are using legacy Zebra printers that do not include Link-OS. Durable printer models like the Zebra Xi Series, 105SL, and the now discontinued ZM4/ZM6 series still have years of service in them if they have been well maintained.
Those customers can use ZebraNet Bridge Enterprise, a Windows application that provides central management of both Link-OS and ZebraLink printers, including those legacy printers.
The ZebraNet solution enables the IT staff to centrally deploy, manage and monitor Zebra printers from a single PC screen anywhere on the global network. Users can expect lower IT costs and more printer uptime with fast, out-of-the-box installation and a simplified Windows graphical user interface.
