The GHS is the United Nations’ recommendation for standardizing and harmonizing the classification and labeling of chemicals. The GHS provides a framework for universal communications of hazardous materials.
- Creates a process of classification for chemicals with defined hazardous criteria.
- Communicates hazard information, as well as protective measures, on labels and safety data sheets thru the use of universal pictograms.
- Defines health, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals for a safer workplace and environment.
The United Nations has produced a document detailing the GHS initiative. It fleshes out what the GHS is, how it is to be applied, and a summary of the classification and hazard communication involved.
